Shanghai has two principal passenger airports. Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) is the city’s main international gateway and sits east of the central city. Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA) is closer to the western urban core and is closely connected with Hongqiao Railway Station, making it important for domestic flights and many high-speed rail journeys.
The right airport is not simply the one with the shorter map distance. Check the airport code on the ticket, the hotel’s actual address, the arrival terminal, the next train station and the time of day. A written transfer plan should name PVG or SHA in full.
The decision in one minute
• Choose PVG when the flight itinerary is international or the airline has assigned Pudong; allow more ground-transfer time into the city.
• Choose SHA when the flight is scheduled there or when the route deliberately connects with Hongqiao Railway Station and a nearby hotel.
• Do not book a flight into one airport and a same-day train from the other without calculating the full transfer, terminal and security sequence.
Airlines and schedules can change. The airport code printed on the confirmed ticket is the authority for the arrival plan.
What the official airport information confirms
Shanghai Airport’s passenger site lists flight information, transfer information, metro, buses, the maglev and taxis for Pudong, as well as dedicated Hongqiao transport and facility pages. The live airport site should be checked for current operating notices, check-in deadlines, terminal changes and transport disruptions.
The airport group also publishes safety notices. For example, its current passenger notice highlights restrictions on power banks without the required 3C certification label on domestic flights. This is a reminder to check the live airport notice rather than rely on an old packing post.
Arriving at Pudong
PVG is usually the more consequential airport for an international arrival. After immigration, baggage collection and customs, the traveler still needs to reach the correct pickup level or transport connection. A private transfer should specify:
1. arrival terminal and flight number;
2. the meeting point permitted by the airport’s current access rules;
3. the driver or guide’s name and phone number;
4. the hotel’s Chinese name and complete address; and
5. a fallback if the flight, immigration queue or baggage is delayed.
The airport lists metro, buses, taxis and the maglev as transport options, but journey time depends on the hotel district, operating hours, luggage and traffic. Do not promise a fixed door-to-door duration from a generic “Pudong to Shanghai” estimate.
Arriving at Hongqiao
SHA is nearer many central districts and sits beside Hongqiao Railway Station. That proximity can make a combined flight-and-rail itinerary sensible, but the two facilities are not the same building. A party must still follow signs, allow walking time, complete any required ticket or security checks and reach the correct station entrance.

Choosing hotel location after the airport is known
A hotel near the Bund, French Concession or another central district may be ideal for city touring but not necessarily for a pre-dawn train. Conversely, a station-adjacent hotel can reduce a transfer while giving up some neighborhood atmosphere. Decide the airport, hotel and next movement together.

Families, older travelers and heavy luggage
Airport planning should reflect the actual party. Families may need a restroom and food stop after immigration; older travelers may prefer a vehicle that reaches the hotel without a long metro interchange; photographers may carry fragile equipment; and travelers with mobility needs may require an accessible route confirmed in advance.
Keep passports, medication and essential chargers in hand luggage. Put a Chinese-language hotel card and the AVIORA emergency contact on paper as well as on the phone. If a child becomes tired or a flight is delayed, the best plan is the one that can be simplified without losing the next confirmed step.
A reliable Shanghai arrival checklist
• Verify PVG or SHA against the latest e-ticket.
• Save the hotel name and address in English and Chinese.
• Confirm terminal, pickup instructions and a delayed-flight procedure.
• Match any onward rail booking to the correct station and passport.
• Check the airport’s current passenger notices before departure.
• Keep a card, RMB cash and offline contact sheet available while the phone connection is being set up.
