Pack for China as a connected journey, not as an exotic destination. The items that prevent the largest problems are ordinary: the passport used for every reservation, a working phone and payment backup, correctly documented medicine, compliant batteries, comfortable footwear, and addresses saved in Chinese.
Most travelers do not need more luggage. They need fewer single points of failure. Keep one arrival outfit and essential medicine in hand baggage; give each adult access to the first hotel and local contact; and do not let one phone, one card or one cloud account hold the entire trip together.
The Short List That Belongs In Hand Baggage
- Passport, required visa or evidence relevant to the planned entry route
- International and domestic transport confirmations
- First hotel name, address and telephone number in Chinese and English
- Travel insurance and emergency assistance details
- Essential medicine in original labeled packaging with supporting documents
- Phone, charging cable and a compliant power bank when permitted
- Primary payment method, different backup card and modest RMB cash
- One change of clothing and weather layer
- Glasses, hearing-device supplies or other items that cannot be replaced easily

This is the list to check before the checked bag leaves your hand. Everything else is easier to solve.
Documents: Consistency Prevents Avoidable Friction
Use the same passport for flights, high-speed rail, hotels and passport-linked attraction reservations. If a passport is renewed after reservations are made, notify every relevant provider; the new number does not silently update old records.
Carry paper or offline copies of the identity page, insurance details, core bookings and first-night address. Store copies securely and separately from the original. A copy does not replace a passport, visa or permit, but it makes communication easier if something is lost.
For visa questions, use the Chinese embassy or consulate and National Immigration Administration rather than a social-media summary. Entry policies differ by nationality and itinerary. Phone And Payment: Build A Primary And A Backup
Before departure, settle the data plan and finish any identity verification requested by the live payment app. Save the security phone number, bank contacts and hotel address offline. A data-only eSIM may work well, but confirm whether any planned service requires SMS or a mainland number.
Carry:
- an unlocked phone if the connectivity plan requires it;
- charging cables for every essential device;
- a compact universal adapter from a reputable manufacturer;
- a power bank that complies with the current carrier and Chinese domestic-flight rules; and
- payment options that do not all depend on the same bank or handset.
China commonly uses 220V/50Hz electricity and several socket shapes. Most modern phone and laptop chargers accept 100-240V, but read the input label; a plug adapter changes the shape, not the voltage. Leave high-power styling devices at home unless their voltage and hotel use are clearly suitable.

Power Banks: Check The Actual Battery, Not The Online Listing
Power-bank acceptance can depend on capacity, labeling, condition, route and carrier rules. China domestic aviation requirements have changed, including scrutiny of required product markings on certain power banks. Do not buy an unmarked battery for the trip or place a loose power bank in checked baggage.

Medicine: Pack Proof With The Product
Keep prescription medicine in original labeled packaging. Carry the prescription or medical record and a clinician's letter for important, injectable, refrigerated or controlled treatment. Record the generic active ingredient, strength, dosage and quantity; brand names alone may not identify the medicine clearly in another country.

For temperature-sensitive treatment, verify the permitted range with the pharmacist or manufacturer. A hotel minibar is not automatically a medical refrigerator. Request the actual storage arrangement before booking and keep the airline's written rules for cooling packs or sharps.
Clothing: Pack For The Route, Elevation And Laundry Interval
“China weather” is not one forecast. Beijing can be dry while Shanghai is humid; Yunnan can move from a mild Dali afternoon to a cold Shangri-La evening; an air-conditioned train can feel different from the platform outside.
Build a small layer system:
- breathable base clothing;
- one light insulating layer;
- a rain shell appropriate to the season;
- sun hat and protection;
- comfortable, already-tested walking shoes; and
- one second pair if the route is wet or walking-heavy.
Choose clothing for repeat use and known laundry points. A ten-day private trip rarely needs ten separate evening outfits. It does need footwear that has already survived a full walking day.
Check dress expectations for any formal, religious or hosted experience in the confirmed itinerary. Carrying one modest shoulder-and-knee-covering layer solves more situations than packing an imagined “China outfit.”
Toiletries And Personal Supplies
Large cities sell excellent everyday products, but the exact brand, shade, size or formulation may differ. Bring the products for which substitution would matter: contact lenses, prescription eyewear, sensitive-skin products, period products of a preferred type, hearing-aid batteries and a compact quantity of familiar over-the-counter items that are lawful to carry.
Pack liquids to meet the most restrictive flight in the itinerary, not only the international sector. Avoid decanting medicine into an anonymous cosmetic container. A small tissue pack and hand sanitizer are useful during long sightseeing days without turning the day bag into a supply cabinet.
Luggage For High-Speed Rail And Private Transfers
Choose a case you can control over a station threshold and through a security queue. High-speed rail is efficient, but luggage remains the passenger's responsibility and space is not the same as an airline check-in system. Oversized cases reduce boarding ease and can complicate vehicle choice.

What Not To Pack
- An itinerary dependent on one phone or one card
- Unlabeled medicine or pills mixed together for border crossing
- Damaged, recalled or poorly marked batteries
- Prohibited weapons, drugs or other restricted items
- Agricultural or food products without checking customs rules
- Excess valuables that will remain in a hotel room
- Shoes being worn for the first time on the Great Wall
- A full wardrobe for a route with planned laundry
Border, aviation and railway controls change. “A friend brought it last year” is not evidence that an item is lawful or accepted now.
