Before departure, settle the data plan and finish any identity verification requested by the live payment app. Save the security phone number, bank contacts and hotel address offline. A data-only eSIM may work well, but confirm whether any planned service requires SMS or a mainland number.

Carry:

• an unlocked phone if the connectivity plan requires it;
• charging cables for every essential device;
• a compact universal adapter from a reputable manufacturer;
• a power bank that complies with the current carrier and Chinese domestic-flight rules; and
• payment options that do not all depend on the same bank or handset.

China commonly uses 220V/50Hz electricity and several socket shapes. Most modern phone and laptop chargers accept 100-240V, but read the input label; a plug adapter changes the shape, not the voltage. Leave high-power styling devices at home unless their voltage and hotel use are clearly suitable.

Power-bank acceptance can depend on capacity, labeling, condition, route and carrier rules. China domestic aviation requirements have changed, including scrutiny of required product markings on certain power banks. Do not buy an unmarked battery for the trip or place a loose power bank in checked baggage.

Keep prescription medicine in original labeled packaging. Carry the prescription or medical record and a clinician's letter for important, injectable, refrigerated or controlled treatment. Record the generic active ingredient, strength, dosage and quantity; brand names alone may not identify the medicine clearly in another country.

China Customs makes the entry decision. Ordinary personal medicine, controlled substances, liquids, needles and cooling equipment do not all follow one simple rule. For temperature-sensitive treatment, verify the permitted range with the pharmacist or manufacturer. A hotel minibar is not automatically a medical refrigerator. Request the actual storage arrangement before booking and keep the airline's written rules for cooling packs or sharps.

“China weather” is not one forecast. Beijing can be dry while Shanghai is humid; Yunnan can move from a mild Dali afternoon to a cold Shangri-La evening; an air-conditioned train can feel different from the platform outside.

Build a small layer system:

• breathable base clothing;
• one light insulating layer;
• a rain shell appropriate to the season;
• sun hat and protection;
• comfortable, already-tested walking shoes; and
• one second pair if the route is wet or walking-heavy.

Choose clothing for repeat use and known laundry points. A ten-day private trip rarely needs ten separate evening outfits. It does need footwear that has already survived a full walking day.

Check dress expectations for any formal, religious or hosted experience in the confirmed itinerary. Carrying one modest shoulder-and-knee-covering layer solves more situations than packing an imagined “China outfit.”

Large cities sell excellent everyday products, but the exact brand, shade, size or formulation may differ. Bring the products for which substitution would matter: contact lenses, prescription eyewear, sensitive-skin products, period products of a preferred type, hearing-aid batteries and a compact quantity of familiar over-the-counter items that are lawful to carry.

Pack liquids to meet the most restrictive flight in the itinerary, not only the international sector. Avoid decanting medicine into an anonymous cosmetic container. A small tissue pack and hand sanitizer are useful during long sightseeing days without turning the day bag into a supply cabinet.

Choose a case you can control over a station threshold and through a security queue. High-speed rail is efficient, but luggage remains the passenger's responsibility and space is not the same as an airline check-in system. Oversized cases reduce boarding ease and can complicate vehicle choice.

• An itinerary dependent on one phone or one card
• Unlabeled medicine or pills mixed together for border crossing
• Damaged, recalled or poorly marked batteries
• Prohibited weapons, drugs or other restricted items
• Agricultural or food products without checking customs rules
• Excess valuables that will remain in a hotel room
• Shoes being worn for the first time on the Great Wall
• A full wardrobe for a route with planned laundry

Border, aviation and railway controls change. “A friend brought it last year” is not evidence that an item is lawful or accepted now.
