For a first visit centered on the Bund, old Shanghai and neighborhood walking, stay on the Puxi side of the river. The Bund and East Nanjing Road suit a short landmark-led trip. Jing'an is the strongest all-round base for restaurants, city access and a less touristic evening. The former concession areas reward travelers who value architecture and local streets, provided the exact hotel is not too far from useful transport. Choose Lujiazui in Pudong for skyline hotels, business or a specific river view, not because it appears opposite the Bund on a map.
The best Shanghai area is decided by three things: which airport or station you use, what you want to do after the guide leaves, and how much cross-city movement the itinerary creates.

The Bund Is A View, But Also A Logistics Choice
Hotels around the Bund and East Nanjing Road put the riverfront, historic facades and central retail within walking distance. That makes the area persuasive for two or three nights, especially when Shanghai is the final stop and the traveler wants an easy evening without another vehicle.
“Bund view” needs verification. It can mean an uninterrupted panorama, a partial angle between buildings or access to a public terrace rather than a view from the booked room. The quoted room category, floor and view wording matter more than the hotel's hero photograph.
Road access also varies. Some entrances face busy streets or pedestrian controls, and a coach or larger vehicle may use a different approach from a car. We check the lobby address and pickup position rather than assuming the pin marks the usable door.
Jing'an Is The Practical All-Rounder
Jing'an gives a first-time traveler more ordinary Shanghai around the hotel: restaurants, shops, offices, residential streets and several directions of travel. It is especially useful when the stay includes the Bund, former concession neighborhoods and a departure from Hongqiao.
The district name covers a large area. A property described as “Jing'an” can sit well beyond the temple and central commercial zone. Measure the walk to the actual metro entrance, not the station label, and check whether a private vehicle can load luggage without blocking a narrow side road.
Choose Jing'an when evenings and food matter as much as waking beside a landmark.
The Former Concession Areas Are Not One Hotel District
The former French Concession is a historical and cultural shorthand, not one compact booking zone. Xintiandi, Hengshan Road, Huaihai Road, the western villa districts and streets near the Shanghai Library offer different access, atmosphere and hotel types.
A small heritage hotel can be a better experience than a large tower, but the same room checks apply as in Beijing's hutongs:
- Is there a lift to the quoted floor?
- Does the room face a road, courtyard or internal light well?
- Can a vehicle stop at the entrance?
- Is breakfast available before an early train or flight?
- How far is the walk to useful public transport in rain or summer heat?
- Is the “heritage” room comfortable for the luggage and bathroom needs of this traveler?
Stay here because you intend to use the neighborhood. If every day begins at the Bund and ends in Pudong, the address works against the itinerary.
Pudong Is Right For A Reason, Not By Default
Lujiazui provides skyline views, modern hotel facilities and easy access to some financial and business locations. For a stopover, conference or traveler who values the hotel itself, it can be exactly right.
For a classic leisure visit, most historic neighborhoods sit across the river in Puxi. Metro and road links make the crossing straightforward, but doing it repeatedly adds friction. A room overlooking the Bund can be visually exceptional while placing the guest on the opposite side of most planned walking.
Pudong Airport is also much farther east than Lujiazui. Staying in Pudong does not automatically mean a short airport transfer. The exact district and time of day still decide the journey.
Hongqiao Can Rescue An Early Departure
Hongqiao Airport and Hongqiao Railway Station form a major transport gateway in western Shanghai. A final night nearby can make sense before an early domestic flight or train, particularly when the alternative is crossing the city during a vulnerable time window.
It is rarely our first choice for a complete sightseeing stay. One transport-efficient night can be useful; four nights beside the station usually exchange the city's evenings for repeated commuting.
Match The Hotel To The Four-Day Route
Our four-day Shanghai itinerary keeps the Old City and Bund together, gives the former concessions their own chapter, crosses to Pudong once and protects a fourth day for personal interests or a water town.
For that structure, Jing'an, the Bund or a well-positioned former concession hotel usually works best. The correct answer changes if the traveler arrives at Hongqiao, departs from Pudong before breakfast or has meetings east of the river. Use the Pudong or Hongqiao guide before finalizing the first and last nights.
The Room And The Route Should Be Quoted Together
A useful hotel recommendation states:
- Exact room category and bedding.
- Breakfast inclusion and service hours.
- View wording, if a premium is being paid for it.
- Vehicle and luggage access.
- Walking distance to the nearest useful transport entrance.
- Approximate transfer logic for the booked airport or station.
- Cancellation terms and any date-specific event premium.
Without those details, “five-star hotel in central Shanghai” is not a meaningful promise.
