For a first visit centered on the Bund, old Shanghai and neighborhood walking, stay on the Puxi side of the river. The Bund and East Nanjing Road suit a short landmark-led trip. Jing'an is the strongest all-round base for restaurants, city access and a less touristic evening. The former concession areas reward travelers who value architecture and local streets, provided the exact hotel is not too far from useful transport. Choose Lujiazui in Pudong for skyline hotels, business or a specific river view, not because it appears opposite the Bund on a map.
The best Shanghai area is decided by three things: which airport or station you use, what you want to do after the guide leaves, and how much cross-city movement the itinerary creates.

The Bund Is A View, But Also A Logistics Choice
Hotels around the Bund and East Nanjing Road put the riverfront, historic facades and central retail within walking distance. That makes the area persuasive for two or three nights, especially when Shanghai is the final stop and the traveler wants an easy evening without another vehicle.
“Bund view” needs verification. It can mean an uninterrupted panorama, a partial angle between buildings or access to a public terrace rather than a view from the booked room. The quoted room category, floor and view wording matter more than the hotel's hero photograph.
Road access also varies. Some entrances face busy streets or pedestrian controls, and a coach or larger vehicle may use a different approach from a car. We check the lobby address and pickup position rather than assuming the pin marks the usable door.
