The Answer, Briefly
For most first-time visitors, Wangfujing or central Dongcheng is the safest all-round base in Beijing. It keeps the Forbidden City, central restaurants and several useful metro lines within a manageable radius. Qianmen is stronger for atmosphere and access to the historic south of the center. Gulou suits travelers who value hutongs and evenings on foot. Sanlitun works for dining and nightlife, while Guomao is usually a business decision rather than a sightseeing one.
That answer changes when a traveler uses a wheelchair, has a 06:30 train, wants a courtyard hotel or expects a driver to wait at the lobby door. In Beijing, the best-looking dot on a map is not always the easiest operating base.

Wangfujing Works Because It Removes Arguments
Wangfujing is not the most romantic answer. It is the answer that creates the fewest avoidable problems for a first visit. There are hotels across several price levels, food is easy to find, and the district sits between the imperial center and the eastern side of the city.
The useful area is wider than the pedestrian shopping street itself. Dongdan and the eastern part of central Dongcheng can provide the same practical position without putting the lobby in the busiest retail corridor. Before confirming a hotel, we check the actual entrance, nearest vehicle stopping point and the direction from which the next day's route begins.
Choose this area when the plan includes the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, a Great Wall day and an early train to Xi'an. It will not make every drive short, but it keeps the week balanced.
