A strong four-day Beijing itinerary gives the Forbidden City and the Great Wall separate days. It does not advertise four days and quietly use the first for an airport arrival. With four full sightseeing days, you can see the imperial center, Mutianyu, the Temple of Heaven, hutong life and the Summer Palace without pairing two physically large heritage sites simply to make the list look generous.

First, Confirm That You Really Have Four Days
An arrival at 14:00 is not Day 1 of this itinerary. Immigration, luggage, the airport transfer and check-in can consume the useful afternoon. A departure at 11:00 is not Day 4 either.
For a four-night stay, many travelers have only three full days. That can still work, but one chapter must leave: the Summer Palace, the deeper hutong day or part of the central heritage program. The five-day Beijing itinerary is the better reference when the arrival and departure sit inside the advertised duration.
Day 1: The Imperial Center Needs One Continuous Story
Begin with the Tian'anmen area only after checking the current access and security process for the travel date. Continue into the Forbidden City on a valid reservation tied to the traveler's passport. The physical sequence matters: this is a long, mostly one-direction visit over stone courtyards, with limited opportunities to shorten the central axis after entry.
Jingshan Park can provide the defining overview after the north exit, but it should remain conditional on weather, energy and stair comfort. A traveler who has already spent hours on hard surfaces loses nothing by seeing the palace properly and leaving the hill for another time.
Do not add the Temple of Heaven in the afternoon merely because both sites appear under “imperial Beijing.” The geography, security and walking make that combination look better on paper than it feels on the ground.

Day 2: Make Mutianyu A Great Wall Day, Not A Race Back To Town
Mutianyu works well for many first-time visitors because its visitor infrastructure allows several route choices. The cable car reduces the initial climb; it does not remove steps, uneven stone, exposed sections or the walk through the visitor area.
The route should be selected around the slowest comfortable walker:
- A short out-and-back near the cable-car arrival for limited time or energy.
- A moderate tower-to-tower walk with enough time to stop.
- A longer one-way route using different ascent and descent systems when conditions and ability support it.
The driver, guide and Wall route should agree before the group separates. “Meet at the bottom” is not a plan when exits, shuttles and parking areas differ.

Return to Beijing for a flexible dinner. A major evening performance or formal banquet can work, but it should not become another non-refundable obligation after a weather-exposed day.
Day 3: See How Beijing Lives Around Its Monuments
The Temple of Heaven is strongest in the morning, when the surrounding park is part of the experience. The visit is not only the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests. Movement, seasonal trees and community activity explain why the site belongs in the city's daily life.
Continue to a hutong area selected for the travelers, not whichever alley is closest to a souvenir stop. A useful afternoon may include a courtyard conversation, food, a family-run workshop or simply a guided walk that explains housing, conservation and change.
Keep this day adjustable. A rickshaw ride, rooftop view or longer walk is an option, not the definition of hutong access. When a traveler is tired after the first two days, this is where a private guide can change the order without losing the story.
Day 4: Give The Summer Palace Enough Room
The Summer Palace is a landscape, not one building. Its useful route depends on season, water transport, entrances, hills and how much of the long corridor or lakeside the group wants to walk. Starting at the wrong gate can create extra distance before the experience begins.
Pair it with one nearby or compatible interest rather than another citywide landmark. Depending on the traveler, that might be a garden, university-area context, contemporary art, a cooking experience or an unhurried final meal. The point is not to fill every hour. It is to let the fourth day belong to something personal after three essential chapters.

- Avoid placing the two hardest walking days back to back when an extra night exists.
- Confirm toilets, shade, meal timing and vehicle pickup points.
