The Answer, Briefly
Choose Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and the wider Wulingyuan area for the sandstone-pillar landscapes most visitors associate with the 'Avatar Mountains.' Choose Tianmen Mountain for a concentrated mountain day built around a dramatic cave, cableways, cliffside paths and proximity to Zhangjiajie city. They are not two entrances to the same attraction.
For a first trip with three usable sightseeing days, the strongest balance is usually two days around Wulingyuan and one Tianmen Mountain day. With only one day, choose one rather than attempting both. With two days, many first-time visitors gain more from two different national-park routes unless Tianmen's cave and cableway are a personal priority.

Choose The Landscape Together With Its Physical Demands
Compare altitude, stairs, shuttle queues, cable cars and weather exposure before choosing the route.
Protect enough nights for changing conditions instead of relying on one compressed scenic day.
Confirm hotel location and park access because a poor base can add hours of avoidable transfer time.
Why Travelers Confuse The Two Places
Zhangjiajie is the name of a city and a larger tourism region. Zhangjiajie National Forest Park sits within the Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area, where Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain, Huangshizhai and Golden Whip Stream create several distinct landscape days. Hotels near Wulingyuan serve these park routes.
Tianmen Mountain rises beside Zhangjiajie city and uses a different ticket, transport system and day plan. Staying in the city can make Tianmen and an airport or railway departure easier, but it creates repeated road transfers if most of the itinerary is inside Wulingyuan. Read the Wulingyuan or Zhangjiajie city hotel guide before fixing the rooms.
What Zhangjiajie National Forest Park Feels Like
The national-park experience is broad and layered. High sandstone pillars, forested valleys, cliff viewpoints and lower waterside paths are connected through park shuttles, elevators, cableways and walking. One day can focus on elevated formations such as Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain; another can use Golden Whip Stream or a different gate to change both scenery and physical effort.
Its strength is depth and weather flexibility. Mist can hide distant peaks, then open without warning. Multiple days create more than one viewing window and let the guide edit the route around crowds. Its weakness is complexity: queues, transfer hubs and the temptation to collect too many named viewpoints can make the day exhausting.
