Your first 24 hours in China should do three things: get you legally and physically settled, make tomorrow easy, and prove that the people operating the trip are connected to one another. A premium arrival is not a theatrical airport greeting. It is a sequence in which the driver has the correct terminal, the hotel has the correct names, the room request is understood, the traveler can reach support, and the first morning does not begin with missing information.
Keep your passport, phone, arrival address, payment backup and operator contact accessible until hotel check-in is complete. Do not place the only copy of a required document in checked luggage. If someone is meeting you, know the exact meeting point and what to do if the flight, immigration or baggage claim takes longer than expected.

A private transfer plan should use the actual flight number and terminal, not only an estimated arrival time. Ask whether the dispatcher monitors flight changes and how long the included waiting period is after landing. International arrivals can vary because of gate position, immigration, baggage delivery and customs.

The proposal may have priced a vehicle by passenger count, but luggage volume matters on arrival day. Tell the operator about large hard-shell cases, mobility equipment, strollers, sports equipment and unusually heavy hand luggage. A technically legal seat count does not guarantee a comfortable transfer.

Hotels in China register foreign guests using their valid travel documents and submit the relevant accommodation information to public security authorities. Present the passport used for the reservation and allow time for the front desk to complete the process. The English name sequence in one system may not look identical to another, so the booking name should be checked before arrival.
For stays in a private residence or another non-hotel accommodation, the foreign guest or host has separate registration obligations. The National Immigration Administration states that registration is required within 24 hours of arrival. On September 21, 2026, it rolled out nationwide online registration through official NIA channels while keeping local in-person registration available. Confirm the current process for the actual address.
Before Leaving The Front Desk, Check The Room Facts
- Correct room category and number of nights
- Bedding configuration
- Breakfast location and service time
- Deposit or incidental hold
- Connecting or nearby-room request
- Wi-Fi access
- Departure or next-day meeting point
- Early breakfast or packed breakfast, if a departure requires it
If the room is wrong, report it immediately to both the hotel and the operating contact. A quiet issue log is more useful than waiting until checkout: what is wrong, who owns it, and by when will it be resolved?
Set Up Payments Without Making One App A Single Point Of Failure
Many travelers use Alipay or Weixin Pay in China, and international bank cards may be linked where supported. Cash and physical cards remain useful backups because app verification, network access, merchant acceptance and bank security controls can vary.
During the first 24 hours:
- Confirm the payment app opens on mobile data or hotel Wi-Fi
- Test a small purchase before relying on it for an important transaction
- Keep some RMB cash for simple contingencies
- Carry a physical bank card separately
- Know how your bank handles overseas verification
- Never give a guide or driver your payment password or verification code
A private trip may include most major services, but travelers still need a practical way to buy personal meals, drinks, souvenirs or independent transport.
The First Briefing Should Reduce Tomorrow's Cognitive Load
The arrival briefing does not need to be long. After an overnight flight, quality means selecting the information that matters now.
Confirm:

- Exact lobby or entrance meeting point
- Weather and appropriate clothing
- Expected walking, stairs and standing

If A Train Journey Comes Next
China Railway operates real-name ticketing. Foreign passengers use valid passport information to purchase eligible tickets and should carry the same document used for the booking. The official 12306 guidance also advises allowing enough time for security, identity checks, station navigation and boarding controls.
Before the first train sector, receive:
- Departure station in English and Chinese
- Train number and departure time
- Seat or berth class
- Pickup time from the hotel
- Who accompanies the party into the station
- The passport details used for the booking
- What to do if the passport has changed or is lost
- Arrival pickup or onward transfer plan
Do not assume “Beijing Station” means any station in Beijing. Major cities have multiple stations, and a wrong-station transfer can consume the margin intended for security and boarding.
The First Day Should Not Try To Repay The Airfare
Long-haul travelers often want to start immediately because the trip feels valuable. The better question is whether the first activity improves orientation or borrows energy from the first important day.
A good arrival-day activity is flexible, close to the hotel, easy to leave and not dependent on a scarce timed ticket. A short neighborhood walk or unhurried meal can help reset the body. A cross-city transfer followed by a major heritage site usually creates pressure without improving the experience.
For families, older travelers and anyone crossing many time zones, protect water, food and sleep before adding “just one more stop.” Private travel should make that choice easier, not make travelers feel guilty for using the flexibility they purchased.

- I can reach the operating contact.
- I know tomorrow's meeting time and place.

- I know which services tomorrow are included.
- I have one payment backup.
