Seven days is best used for a focused route rather than a national highlights list. Choose Beijing and Xi'an, Chengdu and Jiuzhaigou, or Shanghai and Zhangjiajie. Each pairing has a different transport and pacing profile.
A seven-day trip should normally include two or three destination chapters at most. If more cities appear, check how many usable sightseeing days remain after flights, trains and hotel changes.
Ten Days: The Classic First Visit
Ten days can connect Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai with enough time for the Great Wall, Terracotta Warriors, city neighborhoods and a measured finale. Adding Chengdu is possible but requires careful flight and hotel planning.

Fourteen Days: Add Depth, Not Just Distance
Fourteen days gives you room for Chengdu, a mountain extension or slower city chapters. It also gives recovery time after long transfers and more flexibility when weather changes an outdoor day.

Count Transition Days Honestly
A train or flight day may include hotel checkout, station or airport transfer, security, luggage, arrival and a new hotel. It can still include a light orientation, but it should not be sold as a full cultural day without checking the actual schedule.
The right itinerary is often the one that removes one city. A coherent story with time to look around converts better than a map crowded with destinations that a traveler barely experiences.
